Snooker Star's Bizarre Walkout Over Waistcoat Distraction
Snooker legend Ronnie O'Sullivan created dramatic scenes at the World Open in China when he walked out of his first-round match just minutes after it began, citing a bizarre complaint about his playing attire.
The Waistcoat Controversy
The seven-time world champion, nicknamed "The Rocket," became distracted by a sponsorship logo stitched to the right side of his waistcoat during his match against Scotland's Ross Muir. The red advertisement patch apparently interfered with O'Sullivan's concentration as he lined up a black ball during the opening frame.
O'Sullivan briefly attempted to scratch at the offending patch in what appeared to be an effort to remove or adjust it before abruptly leaving the auditorium. This unexpected exit caused a delay of several minutes, leaving opponent Muir visibly confused as he remained seated at the table.
Return and Dominant Victory
Following some adjustments to his clothing, O'Sullivan returned to complete the match in commanding fashion. Despite continuing to fiddle with his waistcoat throughout the contest, the 50-year-old Englishman demonstrated his class with a comprehensive 5-1 victory.
The match had already experienced one unusual interruption when an insect landed on the cue ball as Muir prepared to take a shot. The Scottish player missed that opportunity, allowing O'Sullivan to establish an early lead that he never relinquished.
Impressive Performance Despite Distraction
O'Sullivan produced breaks of 83 and 114 during the match and came tantalizingly close to achieving his 18th career 147 maximum break in the fifth frame. He successfully potted 15 consecutive reds with blacks before finally missing when attempting to sink the final black into a corner pocket.
This tournament appearance marked O'Sullivan's first competitive action since the World Grand Prix in early February. The victory was particularly important for his ranking position as he prepares for next month's World Championship at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield.
Tournament Context and Future Matches
The win sets up a third career meeting with Matthew Selt on Wednesday, with O'Sullivan having received a bye in the second round after opponent Ishpreet Singh Chadha withdrew from the tournament.
O'Sullivan currently finds himself in need of strong performances to protect his world ranking position, having dropped to 12th place due to recent limited tournament appearances. Last month, it was announced that he would compete in the World Seniors Championship later this year, potentially attempting a unique Crucible double.
Elsewhere in the World Open, defending champion John Higgins progressed with a 5-3 victory against Liam Highfield, while world number one Judd Trump was scheduled to face Mark Lloyd in later Monday action.
