Jose Ortiz's Emotional Triumph in the Dubai World Cup
Jockey Jose Ortiz was overcome with emotion, shedding tears of joy, as he guided Magnitude to a stunning victory in the 30th edition of the Dubai World Cup at Meydan. The 15-2 chance outperformed Japan's highly regarded Forever Young, with Meydaan securing third place for the British training duo of Simon and Ed Crisford.
A Strategic Victory on the Dirt Track
Ortiz and Magnitude seized control early in the race, establishing a lead of several lengths as they entered the straight. Despite pressure from a competitive field, the pair maintained their advantage, ultimately crossing the finish line with a length to spare over Forever Young, a globetrotting champion with victories in the Breeders Cup Classic and two Saudi Cups.
In a post-race interview, Ortiz expressed his elation, stating, "I'm very happy, and we knew we had a very good horse, but Forever Young is one of the best horses in the world, and we had to respect that." He explained that while leading from the start wasn't the initial plan, Magnitude's tactical versatility allowed them to adapt. "He broke well and put me on the lead, and I was very happy to be there," Ortiz added.
Dream Fulfilled for Ortiz and Connections
The victory marked a dream come true for Ortiz, who dedicated the win to trainer Steve Asmussen and his family. "To win the Dubai World Cup is a dream come true. I'm very happy for Steve, who is back home, and very happy for my family who I wish were here today," he said.
Magnitude, saddled by Steve Asmussen, becomes the 15th US-trained horse to claim the Dubai World Cup, joining illustrious names such as Cigar, Curlin, California Chrome, and Arrogate. Asmussen, who previously won with Curlin in 2008, prepared Magnitude with the same two prep races used for 2017 runner-up Gun Runner, another horse owned by Winchell Thoroughbreds.
Ron Winchell, representing the ownership, commented, "We knew coming back here we were packed with a very big horse, but it was a big effort, and it paid off." The win underscores the strategic prowess of the team and Magnitude's rising status in international horse racing.
