A devastating explosion at a shipyard in New York City has resulted in at least one fatality and left numerous individuals injured. The incident occurred on Staten Island when a dry dock was rocked by a blast approximately 50 minutes after a fire ignited aboard a vessel around 3:30 PM.
Explosion Details
Fire crews were actively combating a blaze within a 150-square-foot metal structure that had trapped at least two workers when the explosion took place. By 5 PM, approximately 31 individuals, including more than a dozen firefighters, had been reported injured, according to FDNY spokesperson Joanna Mariano. A civilian was confirmed as the sole fatality thus far.
Injuries and Response
Two firefighters and another individual are in critical condition, while two additional firefighters sustained moderate injuries. The remaining wounded, including two EMS workers transported to a hospital on Staten Island, suffered minor injuries. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani addressed the press on Friday evening, describing the situation as a complex and rapidly evolving emergency. He expressed deep sorrow over the civilian death and extended condolences to the family.
Mayor Mamdani stated, 'One fire marshal is in critical condition and one firefighter is in serious condition. A few minutes ago I met with the firefighter and his family, as well as the fire marshal's family. I am deeply moved by their courage and their service to this city. I am heartbroken to report that one civilian has passed away.' He confirmed that emergency responders remain on site to contain and extinguish the fire.
Scale of Emergency Response
By Friday evening, over 200 firefighters and emergency medical personnel were present at the scene, as reported by Mariano. Approximately 68 units were dispatched, with 212 fire and EMS personnel responding, according to Fox News. Local resident Richard Obiozor recounted to ABC 7, 'We saw a bunch of fire trucks and I heard someone say every single fire truck and police officer on the entire island was over here. A couple minutes later, a massive explosion, shock wave came in and a person in a white suit, I think the captain, said "back up."'
Investigation Underway
The cause of the fire and subsequent explosion remains unclear as investigations continue. Authorities are working to determine the origin of the incident and prevent further harm.
