Andre Onana Eyes Manchester United Return Following Michael Carrick Appointment
Onana Wants Man Utd Return After Carrick Arrival

Andre Onana Determined to Reclaim Manchester United Spot

Andre Onana, currently on loan at Turkish club Trabzonspor, has expressed a strong desire to return to Manchester United and compete for his place in the squad. The Cameroonian goalkeeper was shipped out at the start of the 2025/26 season under former manager Ruben Amorim, but he still fancies his chances of making a comeback at Old Trafford.

Onana's Loan Spell and United's Goalkeeping Situation

Onana is spending the current season on loan with Trabzonspor, where he has made 20 appearances. However, his performances may be of little interest to Manchester United, given the impressive form of his replacement, Senne Lammens. Lammens arrived in an £18 million move from Royal Antwerp on transfer deadline day in September, prompting United to send Onana to Turkey.

Trabzonspor do not have the option to sign Onana permanently, meaning the goalkeeper will return to his parent club this summer. During his time at United, Onana has played 72 times, but he now faces stiff competition from Lammens, who has been an assured presence in goal.

Lammens' Impact and Carrick's Influence

Senne Lammens has started 21 consecutive games under managers Ruben Amorim, Darren Fletcher, and Michael Carrick, keeping five clean sheets so far. The Belgian goalkeeper is part of an improving defence under interim boss Carrick, with Altay Bayindir as the number two and veteran Tom Heaton also in the goalkeeping group.

Michael Carrick has praised Lammens' composure and reliability, stating after a man-of-the-match performance in a 1-0 win over Everton: "For me, as a goalkeeper, to be reliable, to be trustworthy. Instead of creating the chaos, you want them to take the chaos away and calm things down. I think Senne is that."

Onana's Hopes and Future Prospects

Andre Onana was signed for £44 million from Inter Milan by his former Ajax coach Erik ten Hag three years ago and still has two years left on his United contract. According to his friend, former Cameroon and Chelsea star Geremi, Onana harbours hope of turning things around at United, especially with the arrival of Michael Carrick.

Geremi told Telecom Asia: "Listen, I know Andre very well and during his time at United there were a lot of things that were not right. It wasn’t just him. And believe me, with the arrival of Michael Carrick, things are looking good for everyone, including him. He is clearly talented and his gifts are rare. The next thing is for him to go back there and fight for his spot."

Onana's future will be decided in the summer, when major changes are expected at United. The club's hierarchy are looking for a long-term successor to Amorim, with Carrick among the options being considered. If Carrick secures the role permanently, Onana's hopes could be dashed, as the interim boss has been delighted by Lammens' form.

Despite the challenges, Onana remains resilient. Geremi added: "Andre has always excelled when faced with a challenge. He thrives when he’s given a fair chance to prove himself." As the summer approaches, all eyes will be on whether Onana can secure a return to Manchester United and reignite his career at the club.
