Onana Targets Manchester United Return After Turkish Loan Spell
Goalkeeper Andre Onana is determined to re-establish himself as Manchester United's first-choice shot-stopper upon his return from a loan spell at Turkish club Trabzonspor. The 29-year-old Cameroonian international, currently on loan until the end of the season, believes he will be given an opportunity to compete for his place at Old Trafford during pre-season training.
A Costly Move and Subsequent Struggles
Onana originally joined Manchester United from Inter Milan in July 2023 for a substantial fee of just over £44 million. Manager Erik ten Hag immediately installed him as the club's number one goalkeeper. However, a series of high-profile errors and inconsistent performances led to his eventual demotion under new manager Ruben Amorim.
The situation deteriorated further at the start of the current season, with Onana failing to start a single Premier League match. Altay Bayindir was initially preferred before United secured the £18 million signing of Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens towards the end of the summer transfer window. Onana's only appearance during this period came in an embarrassing Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, where he was directly at fault for one of the goals conceded.
Loan Move to Turkey and International Omission
Facing limited prospects at United, Onana was sent on loan to Super Lig side Trabzonspor on 11 September last year. This move came after United had already committed to Lammens as their new first-choice goalkeeper. The loan agreement is set to conclude in May, at which point Onana is scheduled to report back to Manchester United for pre-season preparations.
Adding to his challenges, Onana was omitted from the Cameroon squad for the recent Africa Cup of Nations tournament, marking another setback in his professional career. Despite these difficulties, he has managed to maintain his starting position at Trabzonspor since arriving in Turkey.
The Lammens Factor and Uphill Battle
While Onana remains hopeful about his chances at United, he faces significant competition from Senne Lammens, who has impressed since taking over the number one role. The 23-year-old Belgian's recent performances have drawn considerable praise, particularly his display in United's 1-0 victory over Everton earlier this week.
Everton manager David Moyes described Lammens as United's "best player" during that match, while interim United manager Michael Carrick lauded his "outstanding" performance. Carrick specifically highlighted Lammens' calmness, composure, and decision-making as exemplary qualities that have solidified his position.
This creates a substantial obstacle for Onana's ambitions, as Lammens' current form and manager confidence make him the clear favorite to retain the starting goalkeeper position next season. Onana's path back to regular first-team football at United appears increasingly dependent on either a dramatic improvement in his own performances or unexpected developments in Lammens' situation.
