Colorado Avalanche Coach Jared Bednar Hospitalised After Puck Strike
Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar was hospitalised with facial fractures after being struck by a loose puck during a National Hockey League game on Saturday. The incident occurred during the Avalanche's match against the Las Vegas Golden Knights at the team's home arena.
Game Incident Leads to Serious Injury
The injury happened when Las Vegas Golden Knights forward Keegan Kolesar attempted a bank shot that went awry, sending the puck flying directly toward the Avalanche bench. The puck struck Bednar on the side of the head, causing immediate concern among players and staff. Medical personnel quickly attended to the coach, who was visibly in pain from the impact.
Bednar suffered multiple facial fractures and a corneal abrasion to his eye, injuries severe enough to necessitate his removal from the game. He was transported to a local hospital for a comprehensive CT scan to assess the full extent of the damage. The Avalanche organisation confirmed the details in a statement released after the game.
Recovery and Coaching Adjustments
Fortunately, doctors have indicated that Bednar is expected to make a full recovery from his injuries and will not require surgical intervention. However, the coach will miss the team's upcoming two-game road trip as he recuperates. During his absence, assistant coaches Nolan Pratt and Dave Hakstol will assume head coaching duties to ensure the Avalanche's season continues smoothly.
This incident highlights the inherent risks in professional hockey, where high-speed pucks and intense gameplay can lead to unexpected injuries, even for those on the sidelines. The Avalanche have expressed support for Bednar, with players and fans sending well-wishes for his speedy return to the bench.
