Former NFL star Chris Johnson has announced he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) during a poignant television appearance. The three-time Pro Bowler, 39, shared the news on Good Morning America on Monday, stating that he was first diagnosed with the disease last year.
Johnson revealed that there is no known history of ALS in his family. His initial symptom was a weakness in his hand, which led to further medical investigation. The diagnosis came as a shock to the former running back, who played for teams including the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals.
In a turn of events, Johnson said he watched an interview with Eric Dane, who died from ALS in February. That prompted him to contact Dane’s physician, Dr Merit Cudkowicz, who is now overseeing his treatment. “We've been with her ever since, and that changed the course of our fight,” Johnson explained.
The athlete is currently undergoing experimental treatment under Dr Cudkowicz’s care. ALS, also known as motor neuron disease, progressively affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle weakness and loss of function.
