Newcastle United's Sean Steur was substituted before the end at Fulham after an awkward fall on a testing afternoon for head coach Matthias Jaissle, who was booked for confronting officials after the final whistle.
The German coach was furious at the end of the game as another of his young players was hurt after a challenge from Alex Iwobi. Jaissle unleashed his anger at fourth official Andy Madley and was booked for his trouble.
Moments earlier, Jaissle had been celebrating as Jacob Murphy lashed home a goal of the month contender, but his side could not hold on. On an afternoon when three points would have eased pressure, he had to settle for just one.
Fulham dominate early chances
Fulham had the first opening of the afternoon with five minutes gone when Oscar Bobb crossed from the right, but England's latest call-up, Josh King, could not connect and Newcastle cleared the danger. Norway star Bobb then tested Lukas Hornicek, who stretched to his right to produce a decent save on 14 minutes for the game's first shot on target, before United survived from the resultant corner as Gonzalo Garcia's free header went over the bar.
Newcastle threatened on 19 minutes as Jacob Murphy's low cross was aimed at the front post for Harvey Barnes, who struck a low shot at Bernd Leno, who saved well. The left flank opened up for Barnes after William Osula's neat flick to free him out wide, but after doing the right thing and taking the shot on, Leno made a block and conceded a corner.
From it Newcastle thought they had grabbed the lead as Murphy whipped the ball in from the corner with Dan Burn prodding home from close range, before Yoane Wissa was adjudged offside. The decision infuriated Burn and his team-mates, with referee Rob Jones waving away protests.
Steur injury mars second half
Hornicek made a superb save to deny King after his stinging volley from the edge of the box was beaten away five minutes before the break. As the half drew to a close, King headed well wide from the centre of the goal in another let-off for Newcastle.
The two sides went in level at the break after Fulham had bossed the possession stats while Newcastle had made it into the penalty area just seven times. Osula slipped in Wissa just before the hour mark, but he could only find the side netting.
With 20 minutes left, Amar Dedic got forward and whipped a ball into the six-yard area, but Osula failed to connect before collapsing in a heap. With 16 minutes to go, Steur, who had been the shining light for Newcastle on a dull day in London, went off for £51m man Matias Fernandez-Pardo. Earlier Steur had been heard screaming in pain after falling awkwardly following a challenge from Berge. Two minutes later the Belgian missed a header from Murphy's cross as Newcastle moved into the closing stages.
Late leveller dents Newcastle hopes
Murphy was alive and alert with 10 minutes left as he latched on to a Fulham give-away before taking five touches and letting fly from outside the box with an absolute howitzer. But the softness at the back that has haunted Newcastle all season returned two minutes later after United failed to deal with a routine break into the box from Fulham. Substitute Cesar Palacios poked it to fellow replacement Rodrigo Muniz, who found the finish to level the game up just three minutes after United's opener.
It was an awful goal from a Newcastle point of view after a sloppy clearance from Barnes led to the goal before dozy defending let Muniz in to level up. With two minutes of normal time left, Barnes worked an opening to leave Hall staring down the throat of Leno, but the keeper made a fine save low down. Fulham pressed late on and Newcastle fans - at that stage - may have accepted a point on a dire afternoon of action.
