Manchester City kept their quadruple hopes alive with a 3-1 comeback win over Newcastle United at St James’ Park in the FA Cup fifth round. Newcastle took the lead but City responded strongly, with second-half goals securing the victory.
Pep Guardiola praised his side's performance, saying: “We played so good … the first 20 minutes in this stadium always happens … Savinho and Jeremy [Doku] so decisive … the best performance we have played in this stadium in our time together here.” He also criticised the refereeing, stating: “There are actions that are not understandable … when Jeremy is pulled from behind … everywhere it is a foul except here.”
Eddie Howe admitted his team ran out of steam: “Good start from us … really good for half an hour … two things happened … we couldn’t sustain the level … they certainly responded … we maybe just ran out of gas.” He emphasised the importance of the upcoming Champions League tie against Barcelona.
John Stones, who returned from injury, said: “Start of the season was great … then I picked up an injury … it’s been tough to get back in the team … it’s just nice to be out there, playing and contributing.” He also praised Savinho, calling him “unstoppable” in one-on-one situations.
The win keeps City on course for a fourth consecutive FA Cup final and a potential quadruple. Newcastle’s season now hinges on the Champions League, with Barcelona visiting on Tuesday.
