Newcastle United defender Fabian Schar has described his harrowing experience after being caught up in the conflict in the Middle East. The Swiss international, who was in the region for rehabilitation following an ankle injury, has now safely returned to Newcastle.
Schar took to Instagram to share a photo from inside a bunker, writing: 'I've just had a few of my most terrifying days having unfortunately witnessed first-hand what's happening in the Middle East. I was there as part of my rehabilitation programme and I'm glad I found a way to get home safely.'
'But what we experienced there, and what's happening right now, is truly frightening. I hope that help gets to all of the people who need it in those affected areas,' he added.
The 31-year-old sustained the injury during a 4-3 victory against Leeds in January. Manager Eddie Howe had confirmed at the time that Schar underwent successful surgery and was expected to be sidelined for around three months.
The conflict has led to the cancellation of over 3,400 flights, with airports in Dubai and Doha shutting down. Of the 300,000 Britons registered with the UK Foreign Office, 102,000 have been affected. Many have secured flights back to the UK, with some departing from Saudi Arabia.
