Newcastle Issue Hands Off Warning To Liverpool Over Isak

Alexander Isak has accused Newcastle United of breaking promises and betraying his trust, in an explosive social media post that has escalated tensions between the striker and the club. The Sweden international declared that their relationship 'could not continue' after he claimed assurances made behind closed doors were not honoured.

Isak has been pushing for a move to Liverpool all summer, with Newcastle rejecting a £110 million bid for the 25-year-old. He missed the Professional Footballers’ Association awards on Tuesday, where he was nominated for the top prize, instead posting a lengthy statement on Instagram. 'When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue,' he wrote, while thanking teammates and fans.

Newcastle responded firmly on Tuesday evening, stating that no commitment had ever been made to allow Isak to leave this summer. 'We want to keep our best players, but we also understand players have their own wishes,' the club said. 'The conditions of a sale this summer have not transpired. Alex remains part of our family and will be welcomed back when he is ready to rejoin his teammates.'

Isak skipped the club’s pre-season tour with a thigh injury that was undetectable on scans, and has been training alone at Newcastle after refusing to reintegrate with the squad. Manager Eddie Howe has described the situation as being 'in control' of the player, while the club were reportedly preparing to fine Isak for missing the opening game of the season.
