Neville slams Gabriel for 'embarrassing' play-acting

Gary Neville accused Arsenal defender Gabriel of 'letting himself down' with 'absolutely embarrassing' play-acting during the Gunners' Premier League win over Liverpool.

The Brazilian went down holding his face following a collision with Liverpool striker Alexander Isak in the opening minutes at Anfield. Gabriel wanted referee Andy Madley to penalise Isak, suggesting his opponent had struck him in the face, but replays appeared to show Isak's arm struck his upper chest.

Neville's criticism on commentary

'He does let himself down at times,' the Manchester United legend and former England defender said on Sky Sports commentary.

'I love his fire, his passion and his tenacity. But there's a push into his upper chest and he goes down holding his face.'

'It's absolutely embarrassing. He needs to stop doing that.'

Arsenal's win and league position

Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game on 16 minutes to send reigning champions Arsenal three points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta's side trailed early pace-setters Manchester City just two weeks ago, but the Etihad club have suffered two successive defeats while Arsenal's only dropped points came at the hands of Brighton.

Liverpool had the chance to climb back into the Champions League spots and move to within three points of Arsenal, but a second league defeat of the season leaves the Reds fifth.

Post-match reaction

Speaking after the full-time whistle, Neville added: 'It was a defensive masterclass from Arsenal.'

'Andoni Iraola will be upset, he will feel like his team have given everything, but the champions have turned up in a season of uncertainty, sabotaged by the Man City saga.'

'They can only do the job they continue to do and that puts them right in the driving seat.'

'Those Arsenal fans will travel back to London tonight absolutely over the moon. What a tough place this is to play football and they've come and conquered it.'

Arsenal and Liverpool are both in Champions League action this week, the former visiting Slavia Prague and the latter travelling to Fenerbahce.
