Gary Neville Issues Strong Demand to Michael Carrick After Sesko's Decisive Strike
Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has delivered a forceful message to manager Michael Carrick, urging him to start Benjamin Sesko in the upcoming Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace. This follows Sesko's crucial match-winning performance as a substitute in United's narrow 1-0 victory over Everton on Monday night.
Sesko's Impact as a Super Sub Strengthens His Case
The 23-year-old Slovenian striker, who joined United in a £74 million move from RB Leipzig last summer, has been in impressive form recently. Despite beginning the match at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on the bench, Sesko entered the fray and delivered the decisive blow in the 71st minute. He expertly finished a swift counter-attack, slotting home a first-time effort from Bryan Mbeumo's unselfish pass to secure all three points for the Reds.
This marked the third time in his last four appearances that Sesko has found the net after coming off the bench. His recent contributions include a winning goal in a 3-2 success against Fulham and a vital equaliser in a 1-1 draw with West Ham earlier this month. These performances have significantly bolstered his argument for a regular starting position under Carrick's management.
Neville's Analysis: A Clear Message from Celebration to Selection
Speaking on Sky Sports, Neville analysed the situation with conviction. "For Sesko now, I think he starts on Sunday against Crystal Palace," Neville stated. "I haven't always been convinced about him this season, but what you have to do is move with what you see. There is a moment now where United have struggled in the last couple of games; he looks like he is growing in his game and in his body, he looks like he has more power in his performance, his confidence is high."
Neville interpreted Sesko's passionate, aggressive celebration in front of the travelling United supporters as a clear signal. "That celebration was a message to everybody, mainly those Manchester United fans over in the corner that were going wild," Neville admitted. "But that was a message to say, 'get me in this damn team now, I start next time'. I think he will have been really disappointed, having scored against West Ham, which was a wonderful goal, not to be in that team today."
Proposed Tactical Shift and Squad Implications
The Sky Sports pundit went on to outline his preferred attacking lineup for the Palace encounter, suggesting a direct personnel change. "I think what you'll see on Sunday is Cunha to the left, Mbeumo to the right, Sesko up top and Bruno in behind. I think Amad will just slip out for a game, he has been really good but I think Sesko starts." This would see Amad Diallo, who started against Everton, make way for the in-form striker.
Neville emphasised the psychological impact of the decision on the player. "Just feeling how Michael would look at that, I think it would kill the lad if he didn't start," he added, underlining the potential boost to Sesko's morale and momentum.
Despite his £74 million price tag, Sesko's overall record this season stands at eight goals from 24 matches across all competitions. However, his recent surge—three goals in his last four appearances—suggests he is hitting a rich vein of form at a critical juncture in the campaign. Carrick now faces a significant selection dilemma, balancing squad harmony with rewarding individual match-winning contributions as United aim to solidify their position in the Premier League table.
