Neuer's Push Claim Overshadows Bayern's First Defeat

Veteran Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has pointed to a contentious push from Arsenal's Jurrien Timber as the catalyst for his side's 3-1 Champions League defeat on Wednesday evening. The Gunners seized control of the match at the Emirates Stadium after Timber headed home from a corner, a goal that Neuer insists was preceded by an illegal nudge.

Controversy Surrounds Opening Goal

The pivotal moment arrived in the first half when Bukayo Saka delivered a corner kick into a crowded Bayern penalty area. Dutch defender Jurrien Timber met the cross with a powerful header, sending the ball past the experienced German captain. Replays of the incident did appear to show Timber making slight contact with Neuer as he navigated the six-yard box.

Speaking to Bild after the final whistle, Neuer expressed his frustration, stating, "I'm not a goalkeeper who throws himself to the ground, you've seen others do that. Maybe that would have helped in this situation. But basically, you have to keep going until the referee blows his whistle."

He further explained his positioning, admitting, "I was obviously off balance, that's clear. Then I was in a different position than I would have liked. And then I couldn't get forward as much." Neuer also suggested that Arsenal's aggressive set-piece tactics are well-known to officials both internationally and in the Premier League.

Arsenal Capitalise on Bayern Errors

Despite Lennart Karl pulling Bayern Munich level after Timber's opener, the German giants could not sustain a challenge. Arsenal's quality shone through in the second half, with Noni Madueke restoring the lead before Gabriel Martinelli sealed the victory with a clever dribble past Neuer for the third goal.

This result marked a significant end to Bayern's impressive 18-match unbeaten streak across all competitions this season. For Arsenal, it was a statement win that puts them in a strong position in their Champions League group.

Reflecting on the performance, Neuer conceded, "Of course, this doesn't feel good. No question about it, we had higher expectations. Arsenal were better in the key moments. We didn't create enough clear-cut chances... Arsenal were simply more dominant. So, the result is acceptable."
