Chelsea returned from the international break with a 2-0 victory at Everton, thanks to a brace from Pedro Neto, but the win was overshadowed by a serious head injury to goalkeeper Emi Martínez. The visitors climbed to fourth in the Premier League table with their first clean sheet since January.
Martínez injury mars Chelsea display
Martínez was carried off on a stretcher after seven minutes of treatment following a collision with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite. The Argentina international gave a thumbs up to Branthwaite as he was taken off, with his neck in a brace.
His replacement, Premier League debutant Mike Penders, was not seriously tested as Everton's threat faded in the second half.
Neto's decisive double
Neto broke the deadlock 44 seconds after the restart, capitalising on defensive uncertainty from Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Jordan Pickford. Jorrel Hato's low cross from the byline took a touch off James Tarkowski and found Neto, whose shot beat Pickford's weak save.
Neto sealed the victory in the final minute of normal time, rolling a confident finish past Pickford after the ball rebounded off Everton substitute Tyrique George and Vitalii Mykolenko.
Everton's first-half chances
Everton edged a first half that featured more needle than quality, with five yellow cards shown. The hosts should have taken the lead when Thierno Barry headed straight at Martínez from close range, and the Chelsea keeper also tipped over a Jack Grealish volley.
Moisés Caicedo hit the crossbar with a thunderous volley from a corner just before the break. Everton suffered their first defeat of the season under David Moyes, with Pickford unconvincing for the second week in succession.
