Neil Warnock Steps Back from Torquay Role After Return

Veteran football manager Neil Warnock is poised to step back from his position as interim manager at Torquay United, a mere two weeks after emerging from retirement to take on the role at the age of 77. Warnock had been serving as an advisor to the club's board since 2024 and assumed the unpaid interim position following the dismissal of former manager Paul Wotton at the end of February.

A Familiar Return to Torquay

This marked a nostalgic return for the journeyman boss, who previously worked at the club over 33 years ago. Warnock has often reflected that his stint at Torquay in the early 1990s was pivotal, crediting it with saving his managerial career as he helped the team avoid relegation at the conclusion of the 1992-93 season.

Brief Tenure and Results

During his short tenure this time around, Torquay United secured a victory against Salisbury, managed a draw with Farnborough, and suffered a defeat to Ebbsfleet United. However, ahead of a scheduled match against Chesham, the 77-year-old hinted that his work with the club was effectively complete. Warnock even suggested the possibility of a change in the dugout for Saturday's fixture, although this ultimately did not materialise.

Board's Search for a Permanent Manager

In comments to the press, Warnock disclosed, 'The interview process has taken place, they have got in mind the people or the person that they want. Now it is just a matter of the board dealing with it really.' He added, 'I know the candidates, but I said to the board that they have to do their due diligence. They have spoken to me about it, but I haven't really given an opinion. They need to appoint who they feel is the right one, having made the decision to let Paul (Wotton) go.'

Warnock expressed confidence in the board's efforts, noting, 'I am sure they're working really hard, they've been all over the place in the past couple of days - welcome to my world! They've been doing hard work getting interviews, we'll have to wait and see now.'

Club Statement on Managerial Appointment

In a statement released on Saturday afternoon, the Torquay United board confirmed they are working diligently to secure a permanent managerial appointment. The statement read, 'On the managerial situation, we know supporters are keen for clarity, and so are we. The process to appoint our new manager is progressing at speed, but this is a hugely important decision for the medium-term future of Torquay United. It is one we simply have to get right.'

The board emphasised the importance of a thorough selection process, stating, 'While we all want matters concluded as quickly as possible, it is more important that the Board completes a thorough process and secures the best possible candidate for our football club than rushes a decision we may later regret.'

Warnock's Recent Managerial History

Prior to his brief return at Torquay, Warnock's last managerial appointment was at Aberdeen in 2024, where he similarly served in a caretaker capacity. His extensive managerial career began in 1980 with Gainsborough Trinity, but he is perhaps best renowned for his work with Sheffield United. Warnock led his hometown club to Premier League promotion in 2006 and guided them to the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and the League Cup.

The popular Yorkshireman also achieved Premier League promotion with Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace, cementing his reputation as a skilled and experienced manager in English football.
