Lachie Neale Reportedly Favours Brisbane Lions Stay Over WA Return
Brisbane Lions midfielder Lachie Neale is understood to be leaning towards rejecting potential offers from Western Australian clubs and would prefer to continue his career with the Queensland outfit when his current contract expires at the end of the 2026 AFL season.
Family Circumstances Fuel Speculation
Speculation about a potential return to Western Australia has intensified following the breakdown of Neale's marriage to his wife Julie earlier this year. The 32-year-old football star publicly confirmed the separation in January, simultaneously stepping down as Brisbane's captain, with Harris Andrews, Josh Dunkley and Hugh McCluggage taking over leadership duties.
Julie Neale has since returned to her home state of Western Australia with the couple's two young children, Piper and Freddie. The family has sold their marital home for $3.2 million, with Neale relocating to his own apartment in Brisbane while maintaining regular travel to Perth to visit his children.
Complex Logistics and Club Support
According to Herald Sun reporter John Ralph, Neale is expected to spend the coming weeks with his daughter before flying to Perth during Brisbane's Round Two bye week. Despite the logistical challenges, Ralph claims Neale's "preferred outcome" is to remain with the Lions beyond 2026.
"The accepted wisdom is that he will play out the season, he'll jump on a plane, and he'll be playing for a WA-based club next season," Ralph stated during Fox Footy's On the Couch program. "I can tell you tonight that Neale's preferred outcome is very much playing at this football club [Brisbane] next season."
Ralph emphasized the "supreme juggling act" required to balance football commitments with family responsibilities, noting Brisbane's willingness to facilitate Neale's potential move to a Western Australian club if that becomes his ultimate decision.
Coach's Perspective and Historical Context
Brisbane coach Chris Fagan addressed the situation earlier this year, expressing hope that Neale would remain with the club while acknowledging the player's unrestricted free agent status.
"I hope he does stay, but he's an unrestricted free agent," Fagan said in January. "He can make a call on what he needs to do. He probably needs the next six or seven months to see what the next right step is."
Fagan added that Neale would have the club's blessing if he chose to return to Perth to be closer to his children, stating: "We're not going to hold anyone to ransom. We'll just go along with the flow on that."
Historical context reveals Neale previously approached Fremantle in 2021 about a potential return to Western Australia. The four-time All-Australian was originally drafted by the Dockers in 2011, playing six seasons with Fremantle before his move to Brisbane in 2018.
Competition and Performance Factors
Both West Coast Eagles and Fremantle are understood to be interested in signing the experienced midfielder, with West Coast potentially offering a more substantial contract. However, Neale remains focused on helping Brisbane achieve a historic three-peat this season, with Fagan noting this has been one of the player's strongest pre-seasons on record.
Neale demonstrated his form during Brisbane's recent pre-season victory against Gold Coast, amassing 31 disposals - the highest tally of any player in the match.
Personal Challenges and Media Adjustments
The marriage difficulties became public toward the end of 2025, with Julie Neale later addressing rumours on social media: "I want to make it very clear that I am not 'working through' anything. I have been betrayed in the most unimaginable way."
Neale subsequently apologized to media, stating: "While I won't go into specifics, I can say that I have let my family down and I apologise for my actions, which have hurt those closest to me. For that, I am deeply sorry."
The midfielder has maintained a lower public profile since the separation while sharing photographs of time spent with his children, including traveling to Western Australia for his daughter's first day of kindergarten. He has reportedly scaled back some media commitments for 2026, including no longer appearing on Fox Footy's AFL 360 program.
Neale remains on track to start for the Lions in their season opener against the Western Bulldogs on March 7, having played 159 matches for the club since joining in 2018.
