Napoli Striker Romelu Lukaku Confronts Club Discipline Over Training No-Show
Romelu Lukaku is confronting potential disciplinary action from Napoli after reportedly failing to attend a scheduled training session, despite having withdrawn from international duty with Belgium due to injury concerns. The Serie A champions officially confirmed the Belgian striker's absence on Tuesday, following his recall to their training facilities, which has ignited widespread speculation regarding his immediate future with the club.
International Withdrawal and Subsequent Club Absence
Lukaku had previously pulled out of Belgium's scheduled trip to the United States, missing crucial World Cup warm-up matches against the US and Mexico, ostensibly to concentrate on regaining his full fitness. However, Italian media outlets have since reported that Lukaku refused to return to Napoli's club facilities for his prescribed rehabilitation programme, further escalating the tense situation and leaving the striker's position at the club in considerable doubt.
"Napoli can confirm that Romelu Lukaku did not respond to today's call to return to training," the club stated in an official release. "The club reserves the right to consider taking the appropriate disciplinary action, as well as to determine whether the player will continue to train with the team for an indefinite period."
A Torrid Campaign Plagued by Fitness Issues
Lukaku, who scored 14 vital goals last season to guide Napoli to the Serie A title, has endured a torrid and frustrating campaign plagued by persistent fitness issues. He was sidelined for the entire first half of the current season due to a significant hamstring injury, and has managed to score just one league goal in five substitute appearances since his return to action in January.
The 32-year-old striker has defended his controversial decision to remain in Belgium for treatment, citing ongoing physical problems that have severely hampered his return to peak competitive form.
"The truth is the last few weeks I wasn't feeling right physically and I had it checked out while I was in Belgium and it showed that there was an inflammation and liquid on my hip flexor muscle next to my scar tissue," Lukaku explained on Monday. "Since it is the second problem I had since coming back early November, I chose to do the rehab in Belgium so I can help when called upon."
"I could never turn my back on Napoli, never. There's nothing more I would love to do than play and win with my team. But right now I have to make sure I am clinically a 100%."
Napoli's Current Standing and Upcoming Fixture
Napoli currently sit third in the Serie A table, trailing leaders Inter Milan by seven points. Their next crucial fixture sees them host second-placed AC Milan on Monday, in a match that could significantly impact the title race. The ongoing saga surrounding Lukaku's availability and commitment adds an unwelcome layer of distraction for the defending champions as they prepare for this pivotal encounter.
