Napoli Target Another Manchester United Star for Serie A Reunion
Italian football powerhouse Napoli are reportedly setting their sights on Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho, potentially creating a third reunion with former Old Trafford colleagues at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.
Sancho Emerges as Serie A Target
According to reports from Italian media outlet Tuttomercatoweb, Napoli manager Antonio Conte has identified Sancho as a potential transfer target. The 25-year-old England international is currently on loan at Aston Villa but could be available for a move this summer.
Sancho's Manchester United career has been turbulent since his high-profile £73 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund in 2021. The winger has experienced multiple loan spells at Dortmund, Chelsea, and currently Aston Villa following a public falling out with former United manager Erik ten Hag.
Successful United Connections at Napoli
Napoli's interest appears bolstered by their positive experiences with former Manchester United players. Scott McTominay has been particularly successful in Italy, being crowned Serie A's outstanding player last season after inspiring Napoli to their championship triumph.
Meanwhile, Danish striker Rasmus Hojlund has scored nine goals in 26 appearances for Napoli, including a crucial double against Juventus. This tally already approaches his entire output from last season, demonstrating his adaptation to Italian football.
Contract Situation and Napoli's Motivation
Sancho's contract with Manchester United expires at the end of the current season, though the club retains an option to extend his agreement by an additional year. This creates potential flexibility for transfer negotiations.
Napoli's interest may have been accelerated by a significant squad setback, with winger David Neres facing approximately two months on the sidelines following tendon surgery. This creates an immediate need for attacking reinforcements in Conte's squad.
Sancho's Current Form and Future
Despite his Manchester United struggles, Sancho has shown flashes of his talent during his loan spell at Aston Villa. He recently scored his first goal for the Midlands club with a 25th-minute header in a 1-0 Europa League victory over Fenerbahce.
The winger has spoken positively about his current situation, stating: "It's nice to have a manager who backs you and obviously believes in you. Again, every opportunity I get, I'm going to try and do 100 per cent, and hopefully I can deliver more goals."
Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has also expressed confidence in Sancho's potential, commenting last month: "I believe in him, hopefully we can get it. He has this challenge with me as well."
Previous Serie A Interest
This isn't the first time Sancho has been linked with Italian football. Juventus attempted to secure the England international in 2024, while Roma appeared close to finalising a deal before he moved to Aston Villa. The Giallorossi eventually signed Leon Bailey instead.
Sancho's loan arrangement with Aston Villa has been cancelled this month, potentially opening the door for a summer transfer. Napoli now emerge as the latest Serie A club attracted by the winger's technical abilities and potential for revival in Italian football.
The potential transfer would continue Napoli's trend of recruiting former Manchester United players who have found renewed success in Serie A, following the positive impacts of McTominay and Hojlund at the southern Italian club.
