Football manager Vahid Halilhodzic, aged 73, was forced to confront Nantes supporters after they invaded the pitch during their Ligue 1 encounter with Toulouse on Sunday. The incident occurred in the 22nd minute at Stade de La Beaujoire, when flares were hurled onto the field and dozens of fans flooded the pitch in protest against the club's relegation, which had been confirmed the previous week.
Chaos Erupts at Stade de La Beaujoire
Stewards scrambled to prevent the ultras from entering the playing area, but balaclava-clad fans managed to evade them. Security barriers were torn down as players fled the scene, with thick clouds of smoke billowing across the pitch. Officials rushed to guard the players' tunnel as the situation escalated.
Halilhodzic, who returned to manage Nantes in March but could not prevent their relegation, was seen being dragged away by security as he remonstrated with the invaders, pleading with them to leave the field. The veteran manager managed to break free from a security official and came face-to-face with the thugs, urging them to depart.
Soon after, large groups of fans dashed back toward the stands as others booed, and Halilhodzic was again dragged away. The pitch was eventually cleared after French police intervened, but the match was soon abandoned due to security concerns.
Emotional Finale for Halilhodzic
After the abandonment was confirmed, the Bosnian-born manager broke down in tears. The match was supposed to be his final game in management before retirement. Halilhodzic had previously called time on his coaching career but came out of retirement to try to save his former club, where he played for five years and also managed between 2018 and 2019.
Nantes had already been relegated following a 3-0 defeat to Marseille the previous week. They will finish in 17th place in the standings, one spot above bottom club Metz.
