Former Manchester United star Nani is celebrating a significant family milestone as his teenage nephew, Leonardo Varela, has signed his first professional contract with Sporting Lisbon, the Portuguese club where Nani began his own illustrious career.
A Proud Uncle's Tribute
The 39-year-old winger, who currently plays for Kazakhstan Premier League side Aktobe, took to Facebook to express his pride at seeing his 17-year-old relative follow in his footsteps. "Another lion! What pride to see my nephew sign his first professional contract, and with Sporting no less. Congratulations, Leonardo," Nani wrote in his heartfelt social media post.
Leonardo Varela's Emerging Career
Details about the young midfielder remain limited, but available information indicates Varela stands at 5ft 6in tall as he begins his professional journey with the Portuguese giants. His signing represents a meaningful connection to his famous uncle's footballing roots.
Nani's Remarkable Journey Continues
Believe it or not, Nani remains an active professional footballer despite his veteran status. In January, he emerged from a year-long retirement to sign with Aktobe in Kazakhstan, where he has taken on a broader developmental role alongside his playing duties.
"I am very excited about this new project and about the opportunity to help develop football at the club and in Kazakhstan," Nani explained about his decision. "FC Aktobe offers excellent conditions and I was very warmly welcomed. I feel that together we can work to elevate the club not only domestically but also internationally."
A Truly Global Career
Since departing Manchester United in 2015, Nani has embarked on what can only be described as a footballing world tour. The Portuguese international has represented ten different clubs across seven countries: Turkey, Spain, Italy, the United States, Australia, Portugal, and now Kazakhstan.
This global journey adds another chapter to an already extraordinary career that saw Nani win four Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy during his Manchester United tenure from 2007 onward.
From Humble Beginnings to Football Greatness
Nani's path to football stardom is particularly remarkable given his challenging childhood circumstances. Abandoned by his parents as a child, he was raised by his aunt in Amadora, near Lisbon, alongside numerous siblings and cousins.
In a poignant recollection for The Players' Tribune, Nani described living conditions at age eight: "I was living with my mother and eight of my siblings in a one-bedroom house, which had a floor full of holes crawling with rats and lizards. We had nothing to eat. We were fighting for our lives."
He added memories of an earlier childhood home: "A few years earlier, when I was seven, we were living in a wooden house that my dad had built. The roof leaked, but we just covered it with plastic whenever it rained."
A Staggering Career Achievement
From these unlikely beginnings, Nani forged a phenomenal professional career spanning 628 club appearances and 112 caps for Portugal between 2006 and 2017. The Euro 2016 winner has scored 152 career goals, though he's still seeking his first for Aktobe after four appearances with the Kazakh club.
His one-year contract with Aktobe includes responsibilities beyond playing, reflecting his growing role in football development as he approaches his forties while continuing to compete at professional level.
