Manchester United are considering Julian Nagelsmann as a potential replacement for Michael Carrick, with the German willing to at least hold exploratory discussions. United officials are deliberating over Carrick's position and assessing the aftermath of Wednesday's dismal 4-1 loss away to Como in the Champions League.
United's Winless Streak Extends
The thrashing extended the Red Devils' winless streak to seven matches, having won just two of their 11 fixtures this campaign, against newly promoted Ipswich and European minnows Sabah. Carrick issued an apology to United's travelling fans at the wet Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium in Italy, echoing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's final gesture at Watford before his dismissal in 2021.
While no verdict has been announced as of Thursday morning, the Telegraph reports that United will contemplate bringing in Nagelsmann should they relieve Carrick of his duties. It's suggested that the former Bayern Munich manager would be receptive to an offer. The 39-year-old has remained without a club since stepping down as Germany boss in July.
Nagelsmann's Connections at United
Nagelsmann - who established his reputation managing Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in his late 20s - has connections with Christopher Vivell, United's director of global talent, with the pair having collaborated at RB Leipzig. During Vivell's tenure as technical director at Chelsea, the club explored appointing Nagelsmann.
The report suggests that Nagelsmann harboured reservations about Chelsea's framework and transfer recruitment in 2023, meaning he would probably seek guarantees from the United board regarding similar matters.
Other Candidates on the Shortlist
Another candidate on United's shortlist is Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler, whose team are performing exceptionally well in the Premier League. Similar to Nagelsmann, Hurzeler embarked on his managerial journey at an early age and has been monitored by the Old Trafford leadership for a considerable time as a prospective option.
The 33-year-old is reportedly reluctant to leave the Seagulls, however, after a brilliant start to the season. Antonio Conte has also been proposed to the Red Devils, though the former Chelsea and Tottenham boss isn't set to be under consideration. Neither is Eddie Howe, who is also available after departing Newcastle.
Carrick's Position Under Pressure
Carrick secured a two-year contract with United after an impressive stint as their interim manager last season. However, matters have already deteriorated, with captain Bruno Fernandes challenging his tactics in a post-match interview. Carrick declined to discuss his future before returning from Italy, but he's scheduled to address the media again on Friday ahead of Sunday's fixture with Bournemouth.
There may be a hostile atmosphere at Old Trafford, with most supporters directing their frustration at United's players and ownership rather than Carrick. "It's not about playing for me, it's about playing for this football club," he said. "It's the responsibility that comes with being in the position; I'm responsible for the football club and the supporters. I'm giving my best, absolute best all the time, I care about it. My whole life's wrapped around it. I genuinely give everything that I possibly can."
