Julian Nagelsmann has emerged as a contender for the Manchester United managerial position, though his star has faded since his early career promise. The situation reflects United's current predicament, with Michael Carrick under pressure following a poor performance in Como.
At 39, Nagelsmann has already managed two high-profile roles: Bayern Munich and the German national team. He was sacked by Bayern amid dressing room discontent and resigned from the Germany job after a historic World Cup defeat to Paraguay.
United Recruitment Disagreement
United's director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is reportedly backing Nagelsmann, but he is at odds with director of football Jason Wilcox over the path forward if Carrick departs. Wilcox holds a higher position in the Old Trafford hierarchy, which could favour candidates with Premier League experience, including Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte, or Fabian Hurzeler.
Nagelsmann would be a bold and potentially divisive choice. Carrick was seen as a unifying figure due to his United playing background and successful interim spell. Nagelsmann, by contrast, lacks that connection.
Management Style Concerns
Nagelsmann, like many German coaches, was influenced by Ralf Rangnick, who has a poor reputation at Old Trafford. His management approach could also raise concerns, particularly if United chiefs consult Matthijs de Ligt about his time at Bayern Munich during due diligence.
Nagelsmann won a Bundesliga title at Bayern, though that is considered the minimum expectation there. His average of 2.31 points per game was comparable to predecessors, but his methods led to his downfall.
Nagelsmann once said: "Thirty per cent of coaching is tactics, 70 per cent social competence. Every player is motivated by different things and needs to be addressed accordingly."
Bayern Dressing Room Issues
After his sacking in March 2023, reports detailed the extent of dressing room problems. Players were confused by his evolving tactics, irritated by his intensity and micro-management, and annoyed by constant lineup changes with little explanation. His decision to axe goalkeeper coach Toni Tapalovic, an ally of Manuel Neuer, had already caused a stir.
Nagelsmann struggled to connect with his players, which ultimately cost him. Given United's squad lacks the elite quality of that Bayern team, his complex methods appear ill-suited to a mid-season rescue mission.
