David Moyes has admitted he fears Jack Grealish may require surgery after the Everton loanee was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his foot. The 30-year-old has been seen by a specialist, and the club are awaiting further details on the severity of the injury.
Speaking for the first time since the issue came to light, Moyes described the setback as a significant blow to his side. “It’s not for me to give the timescales – we’ve not got it yet from the doctors – but he has a stress fracture in his foot,” he said. “It’s a big blow because he’s been hugely important to us since the start of the season.”
The injury emerged after Everton’s win at Aston Villa on Sunday, where Grealish played the full match despite feeling discomfort. The former Villa star had been experiencing pain in his foot for several weeks but continued to play through it. “He is a boy who doesn’t want to be injured and he wants to play every game,” Moyes added.
Grealish initially picked up a calf injury during the match, and during treatment the following day, the foot problem was discovered. He was subsequently referred to a surgeon for further assessment. Moyes noted that talks about a potential operation would take place if necessary.
The Everton boss expressed sympathy for the player, who had been enjoying a strong run of form. “It’s a real pity for the boy. He’s been back at it, enjoying it and doing what he is good at. He has been supported brilliantly by the supporters at Everton.”
