Jose Mourinho Emerges as Genuine Contender for Newcastle United Managerial Role

Jose Mourinho has emerged as a genuine contender for the Newcastle United managerial position should Eddie Howe leave the club. The Portuguese coach, who has previously managed in the Premier League with Chelsea, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur, could be poised for a swift return to English football.

Newcastle's Difficult Season and Managerial Speculation

Newcastle United have endured a challenging season, currently sitting 14th in the Premier League table after 32 games. This position makes a return to European football next term highly unlikely, increasing pressure on current manager Eddie Howe. According to reports from talkSPORT, Mourinho is one of three managers being touted as a potential successor should Howe depart.

The club's Saudi owners are reportedly attracted to the idea of a big-name appointment if Howe moves on. Howe himself would consider leaving if he feels he has taken the club as far as possible, having been appointed in 2021 and leading Newcastle to two Champions League campaigns and ending a long trophy drought with last season's Carabao Cup win.

Mourinho's Comments and Current Situation

Mourinho, currently managing Portuguese giants Benfica, has already spoken about the prospect of managing Newcastle. Speaking ahead of Benfica's Champions League match against Newcastle, he stated:

"I don't regret [not managing here] because I never had a chance to. Never close (to the manager's job). Close to coming with Sir Bobby Robson (as assistant). That possibility came when I was starting to think about myself. There was a lot of media talk but I was never contacted by Newcastle, never."

He added: "I don't think they need a [new] coach, I don't think they'll need me and I hope it goes well for Eddie. I wouldn't change Benfica for any club in the world."

Other Candidates and Howe's Future

Mourinho is not the only high-profile manager under consideration by Newcastle's owners. Former Manchester City and Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini also has admirers in the North East. Additionally, outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola would reportedly be open to a move to St James' Park once his contract expires, though he faces interest from La Liga club Athletic Bilbao.

Eddie Howe's immediate future at Newcastle is likely to hinge on the team's performance over the final weeks of the season. The Magpies face a challenging run of fixtures including matches against:

  • Bournemouth
  • Arsenal
  • Brighton
  • Nottingham Forest
  • West Ham
  • Fulham

Howe, 48, has been instrumental in Newcastle's recent successes, but the club's current league position has sparked speculation about potential changes in the managerial setup as the owners seek to return to European competition.
