James Milner celebrated his record-breaking 654th Premier League appearance as Brighton secured a vital 2-0 win at Brentford. The 40-year-old midfielder surpassed Gareth Barry's previous record, marking the occasion with an accomplished display that helped the Seagulls end a worrying run of one league win in 13 games.
First-half goals from Diego Gómez and Danny Welbeck gave Brighton the lead, and Milner's steady presence in midfield ensured they held on. He was substituted in the 90th minute to applause from both sets of supporters, and his teammates pushed him forward to acknowledge the away fans at full time.
“It’s a big number and it’s nice to get to the record, but it’s an opportunity to give a nod to so many people who have helped me,” Milner said. “I’m delighted I was able to play a few more minutes today and at Villa and hopefully people can see I can still contribute to the team.”
Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler praised Milner's fitness and professionalism. “He is still super fit. Every week and in every training session he runs the most, he sprints the most,” Hürzeler said. “He is capable of doing a lot of impossible things.”
