Rory McIlroy's Masters Dig Leaves Fellow Golfer 'Hurt'
Rory McIlroy delivered a brutal comment to fellow Masters competitor JJ Spaun that left the American golfer feeling deeply hurt, according to recent revelations. The incident occurred just weeks after McIlroy defeated Spaun in a playoff at the Players Championship in 2025, setting the stage for a tense exchange at Augusta National.
The Playoff That Sparked the Rivalry
Before securing his Masters victory twelve months ago, McIlroy faced Spaun in a dramatic three-hole aggregate playoff at the Players Championship. The Northern Irishman showcased his skill by landing on the green at the 17th hole, while Spaun overshot and found the water, handing McIlroy the win. This moment would later fuel a pointed remark from the four-time major champion.
A Cheeky Comment at the Masters Par-3 Contest
Weeks later, at the typically light-hearted Masters Par-3 contest, Spaun found himself in another playoff situation. McIlroy seized the opportunity to remind him of his previous failure. Speaking on GOLF's Subpar podcast, Spaun recounted the exchange, revealing how McIlroy's words cut deep.
"[Rory's] like, 'Are you doing a playoff for the Par-3 Contest?' I'm like, yeah, I guess. And he's like, 'Better get the club right this time.' That hurt, that hit me deep," Spaun said. "Shane Lowry was there, he's like, 'F*****g hell, Rory.' Granted, it was a little rinky-dink par-3, but doesn't matter, it was still a little too soon to hear that. [The wound] was not healed yet."
Turning Hurt into Motivation
Despite the sting of McIlroy's comment, Spaun used it as a catalyst for success. Later that year, he claimed victory at the US Open, sinking an impressive 64-foot putt on the 18th hole at Oakmont Country Club to edge out Robert MacIntyre by two strokes. The hurt from the Players Championship, combined with McIlroy's cheeky dig, pushed him toward this major triumph.
"The Players was sort of a springboard into self-belief," Spaun explained before his US Open win. "But to do that at The Players, a course where I'd never done well historically, and to go head-to-head with Rory on Sunday, and then the playoff was great for my confidence. Sadly, I didn't win, but it was brilliant for me to lean back on that experience."
McIlroy's Current Masters Campaign
Now, McIlroy finds himself in a position to channel similar self-belief as he heads into the final round of the Masters tied for the lead. He will tee off alongside co-leader Cameron Young on Sunday night, with the chance to defend his Green Jacket and become the first to do so since Tiger Woods in 2002.
Reflecting on a challenging third round, McIlroy said, "There was just a couple where I had maybe awkward numbers or trying to take a little bit off and I missed those ones left. So something to maybe go and work on tonight and, again, try to figure that out. I think for me it's just about keeping my lower body moving. If I can just get my lower body moving through impact, then that should sort of fix it."
As the golf world watches, McIlroy's journey at Augusta National continues, while Spaun's story serves as a reminder of how competitive spirit and personal motivation can drive athletes to greatness.
