Bryan Mbeumo Offers Nuanced View on Manchester United's Recent Resurgence
Bryan Mbeumo, the Cameroon international forward, has delivered a telling assessment of Manchester United's current form under interim manager Michael Carrick, suggesting the team's improvement began under previous boss Ruben Amorim. Mbeumo's comments come after he scored his third goal in four matches during United's 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, a result that extended Carrick's perfect start to four consecutive wins.
Mbeumo Believes Progress Was Evident Before Carrick's Arrival
While the statistics under Carrick are undeniably impressive – with United scoring ten goals in his four games compared to just five in the four Premier League matches prior – Mbeumo insists the narrative of a dramatic turnaround is overstated. The £71 million summer signing from Brentford now has ten goals across all competitions this season, but he is keen to highlight the foundations laid during Amorim's tenure.
"I just feel we built on what we were doing from the start because I don't think it was that bad as a lot of people felt," Mbeumo explained. "We just work together, make the effort together, with a big mentality, and we're never beaten. Even if someone gets past, we come back to support and just try to give it our all."
Carrick's Calm Demeanor Contrasts with On-Field Excitement
The victory over Spurs was sealed by a Bruno Fernandes goal after Mbeumo's opener, which came from a rehearsed short-corner routine involving defender Jonny Evans. Mbeumo admitted the move had failed in training initially, but proved decisive when it mattered most. The goal sparked jubilant celebrations at Old Trafford, with Mbeumo praising the "massive community" of United fans for their energy.
However, both player and manager are refusing to get carried away. Carrick, known for his composed presence in the technical area, emphasized the importance of balance. "I think it's just managing the moment," he said. "I'm not particularly thinking I need to look a certain way. I’m not into that. It's not a performance for me."
A Measured Approach to Sustaining Success
Carrick acknowledged the emotional side of football, referencing occasional exuberant goal celebrations, but stressed his focus remains on clear decision-making. "There's definitely another bit of trying to be calm and thoughtful and calculate it at the right time as well," he added.
This philosophy appears to be paying immediate dividends, yet Carrick is adamant there is no room for complacency. "We're not getting carried away," he stated. "I'm certainly not thinking everything's great. We've cracked it, you know? There's a lot of work to do, so I'm fully aware of that."
Mbeumo's perspective adds a crucial layer to the story of United's recent revival. While Carrick's impact is visible in results and morale, the forward's insistence that the squad's collective mentality and work ethic were already evolving under Amorim suggests the current success may be more of a continuation than a complete rebirth. As United look to maintain their momentum, this blend of past groundwork and present management could prove vital.
