Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca says the fallout from the club being found guilty of cheating Premier League rules has been more difficult for supporters than for the players or himself. Speaking after City's 3-0 win at Liverpool on Sunday, Maresca praised the away fans for their backing in the first game since the verdict was announced.
Fans face taunts and banners
City players, staff and supporters have been exposed to criticism since news of the rule-breaking emerged nearly three weeks ago. At Anfield, banners called City's trophies tainted and fans chanted 'cheats' when the Blues had the ball. Despite the hostile atmosphere, Maresca's team delivered a 3-0 win and went over to celebrate with their supporters at the final whistle.
"It probably has been more tough for our fans than for the players or for me because it's probably more complicated," said Maresca. "If I am an Arsenal fan or a United fan and you are a City fan, I can tell you, 'Hey, my friend, you cheat' or this kind of thing. So it probably has been more tough for them.
"But again, we were happy at the end of the game inside the changing room. We were very happy celebrating the three points because we know how difficult it is at Anfield away. So that's why we were very happy."
Perfect start continues
City have won their first eight games of the season under Maresca. Attention now turns to Wednesday's Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain, with Maresca hoping for similar support against the back-to-back European champions.
"Anfield was unbelievable because even if the environment was the environment that we know, the fans were there from the beginning of the game," said Maresca. "They brought their passion and their voice and hopefully they can do the same tomorrow night, and then Ipswich at home on Saturday where we need to continue.
"I'm excited for tomorrow night because I was here the Treble season and I know that CL nights were special. I hope that tomorrow night can be special too."
