Enzo Maresca has opened up about his future, suggesting he is prepared to return to management amid reports linking him with a potential move to Manchester City if Pep Guardiola departs. The former Chelsea boss, 46, has been out of work since January following a fallout at Stamford Bridge, but his reputation remains strong after winning two trophies in 18 months, including the Club World Cup.
Maresca's Connection to Manchester City
Maresca previously worked under Guardiola at Manchester City and within the club's academy, guiding the Under-21 side to their first Premier League 2 title in 2021. He later returned as part of Guardiola's coaching staff during the 2022-23 campaign, when City won the Premier League title. This history has led to speculation that he could be the natural successor should Guardiola decide to leave this summer.
Maresca's Readiness for Next Chapter
Speaking on Sky Italia, Maresca confirmed his eagerness to return to the dugout. "I feel ready for the next chapter, that is the most important thing," he said. When asked specifically about the Manchester City job, he did not rule it out: "What matters, regardless of the club, is being ready. There are only a few weeks left until the end of the season, then we'll see what happens."
Other Potential Destinations
Maresca has also been linked with Napoli and Roma in his native Italy. His managerial career includes a brief stint at Parma in 2021, which lasted only 14 games, followed by a successful spell at Leicester City, where he guided them back to the Premier League as champions after their relegation. His time at Chelsea was turbulent, but he secured Champions League qualification and won the Conference League in his first season.
Guardiola's Future at Manchester City
While City are making contingency plans for Guardiola's possible departure, the Catalan recently hinted he might stay. "I wouldn't be here for 10 years, even with good titles, if I didn't have an incredible environment," Guardiola explained. "Now I feel more, I don't know… happy, not happy, but I don't know… still have incredible energy, still I'm so good, coming here to work on my day off." Guardiola remains under contract until 2027.
Maresca's Chelsea Departure
Maresca left Chelsea by mutual consent in January after a run of two wins in nine games, compounded by off-pitch disagreements. The demanding Club World Cup schedule meant the Blues had little break last summer, leading to player fatigue. Despite this, Maresca's stock remains high, and he is seen as a strong candidate for top managerial roles.
