Former Real Madrid left-back Marcelo has declared that Lionel Messi is a superior footballer to his former teammate Cristiano Ronaldo. The Brazilian defender experienced both players at their peak during his time in Spain, sharing the pitch with Ronaldo and facing Messi in numerous El Clasico encounters.
Marcelo's Verdict on Messi and Ronaldo
In an interview on Romario TV, Marcelo was asked who was tougher to play against. He responded: "Messi. He was extraordinary. I'm still trying to catch him." Marcelo elaborated on Messi's unique qualities: "He understands all the positions on the field very well. When a teammate comes with the ball, he already knows where to go. He's very impressive. Messi is very tough."
Marcelo played alongside Ronaldo for Real Madrid on 333 occasions and faced Messi 33 times, with the Argentine scoring 24 goals in those meetings. The rivalry between the two superstars began when Ronaldo joined Real Madrid from Manchester United in 2009. Ronaldo scored 450 goals in 438 games for Los Blancos, winning two La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues, while Messi netted 672 goals in 778 games for Barcelona, securing numerous trophies including four Champions Leagues.
Gratitude for the Era
Despite his allegiance to Real Madrid, Marcelo urged fans to appreciate both players rather than engage in endless comparisons. "I think that young people, and those of us who played in their era, have to be grateful for that," he said. "Because I was able to experience both of their eras. We have to be grateful that we were able to live through those times. It's something to enjoy."
Messi now plays for Inter Miami, while Ronaldo represents Al-Nassr. Their last competitive meeting was in December 2020. The upcoming World Cup 2026 could see them face off again on the international stage.
