Manuel Neuer's Heroic Performance Overshadowed by Post-Match Tetchiness
Manuel Neuer delivered a stunning goalkeeping masterclass to secure Bayern Munich a crucial 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final. However, the veteran shot-stopper's post-match mood was decidedly prickly as he bluntly shut down questions about his international future.
A Goalkeeping Masterclass at the Bernabeu
Bayern Munich travelled to the Spanish capital and emerged with a precious one-goal advantage, largely thanks to their 40-year-old goalkeeper. Goals from Luis Diaz and Harry Kane had the German giants 2-0 up early in the second half, but Real Madrid's relentless pressure threatened to undo their lead.
Neuer produced a series of spectacular saves to deny Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior, demonstrating why he remains among the world's elite. Even after Trent Alexander-Arnold's cross found Mbappe at the back post to pull one back for Real, Neuer stood firm. A late mistake by Dayot Upamecano presented Vinicius with a golden one-on-one opportunity, but the Brazilian forward could not beat Bayern's formidable last line of defence.
For his match-defining contributions, Neuer was rightly awarded the player of the match honour. Yet, the post-match narrative quickly shifted from his on-field heroics to his off-field frustrations.
"We're Not Talking About That" - Neuer's Blunt Dismissal
When reporters broached the subject of a potential return to the German national team for this summer's World Cup, Neuer's patience visibly snapped. "Shall we bring this up now?" he retorted, before delivering a more definitive rebuke.
"As I said, we're not going to get into that here now," Neuer stated bluntly at the Bernabeu. "Where did we play today? That was a sensational performance; we're not talking about the national team here. I've said my piece and I'm focusing on FC Bayern."
The goalkeeper, who has 124 caps for Germany, announced his international retirement following the Euro 2024 semi-finals and has consistently maintained he will not reverse that decision. His focus, he emphasised, is solely on Bayern Munich's quest for Champions League glory. "It's important to confirm that in the second leg," he added. "Nothing else matters to me."
Mixed Messages from the Bayern Camp
Despite Neuer's unequivocal stance, his Bayern Munich teammate Aleksandar Pavlovic offered a contrasting perspective when asked about the goalkeeper's possible international comeback. "Yes, absolutely. I never say no to Manu," the Germany international remarked, highlighting the divided opinions within the camp.
Currently, Julian Nagelsmann's German national side relies on Hoffenheim's Oliver Baumann as first-choice goalkeeper, with Alexander Nubel, on loan from Bayern to Stuttgart, serving as the backup. Neuer's outstanding club form inevitably fuels speculation, but his words suggest the door remains firmly closed.
Kompany's Praise for a Goalkeeping Great
Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany was effusive in his praise for Neuer's enduring quality, though he diplomatically avoided labelling him the outright greatest of all time. "You are going to get me in trouble with guys like Thibaut Courtois, whom I like very much as well," Kompany laughed during his post-match press conference.
"Look, everybody can have their own choice, but Neuer is one of the very few. He has been doing this at this level for a very long time. Not many goalkeepers are able to perform like this at this age," Kompany added, acknowledging the remarkable longevity of his star goalkeeper's career.
As Bayern Munich prepare for the second leg, they do so with a slender advantage and the immense confidence that comes from having a world-class goalkeeper in imperious form. Whether that form will translate into a World Cup swansong for Germany remains a topic Neuer is determined to keep off the agenda.
