Man Utd's Tchouameni hopes hinge on Guardiola's future

Nicky Butt has indicated that Manchester United's chances of signing Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni this summer could be complicated unless Pep Guardiola departs Manchester City. The former United midfielder believes the French international would be an ideal addition to the squad but acknowledges the deal may require Guardiola's exit to facilitate a chain of moves.

Tchouameni as a Target

Manchester United are actively seeking two new central midfielders during the upcoming transfer window. Tchouameni has emerged as a prime candidate to replace the outgoing Casemiro, with reports from The Telegraph confirming the club's interest in the 26-year-old. However, any potential transfer would depend on Real Madrid securing a replacement, with Manchester City's Rodri reportedly among their targets.

Butt's Perspective

Speaking exclusively to Paddy Power, Butt expressed his admiration for Tchouameni: "I loved him at Monaco before he went to Real Madrid. I think he's a phenomenal footballer and exactly what United need in that sitting area." He added that a deal seems unlikely unless Real Madrid can find a suitable replacement, potentially Rodri, if Guardiola leaves City.

"I don't see Real Madrid selling Tchouameni until they get somebody who can replace him - maybe Rodri if Pep leaves Man City - or if [Florentino Perez] wants to rip it up because they're not winning," Butt explained. "He's a phenomenal player and that would be showing real intent of, we're not messing about, we're going to go for it."

Guardiola's Future

Speculation has grown in recent months that Guardiola could leave Manchester City at the end of the season. Fresh reports suggest that Enzo Maresca, Guardiola's former assistant, is the leading candidate to succeed him. Guardiola has been at the Etihad for a decade, winning 18 trophies, including the Champions League and six Premier League titles. City are currently level on points with Arsenal in the title race with five games remaining.

Butt concluded: "He's playing for one of the biggest football clubs in the world. It's a long shot and, for me, depends on if Pep was to leave."
