In January 2023, United were forced into an unexpected goalkeeping move when Martin Dubravka was recalled by parent club Newcastle United. Dubravka had joined on a season-long loan in summer 2022 but made only two appearances under Erik ten Hag. Newcastle triggered his recall hours after the window opened, leaving United exposed. A club statement thanked Dubravka and wished him well, and within five days, Jack Butland was brought in on loan from Crystal Palace to provide cover.
The goalkeeping saga continued in summer 2023 when David de Gea ended his 12-year stint at Old Trafford. United swiftly signed Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, but Onana later departed on loan to Trabzonspor, paving the way for Senne Lammens to take the gloves. Lammens' representative, Mark Volders, revealed that United initially intended to keep Onana as a mentor for the young Belgian. Speaking to Belgian publication HBVL, Volders said: 'For a long time, the intention within United was for Onana to stay and for Senne to be given time to adjust. Ultimately, they changed their tune right at the very end, Onana left, and fully embraced Senne. But in hindsight, you can only say that United was right about that.'
Lammens has impressed since stepping up, earning Player of the Match honours in Tuesday's 1-1 draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers. His performances suggest United may have finally found De Gea's long-term replacement.
