Manchester United have ended their pursuit of Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba after baulking at the £120m price tag. The 21-year-old emerged as the Red Devils' primary target for a defensive midfield role, but negotiations stalled after intermediaries and direct talks with Brighton revealed the club's unwillingness to sell.
Baleba's representatives informed United that a bid in the region of £120m—surpassing the fee Brighton received for Moisés Caicedo in 2023—would be required to consider a transfer. The Athletic reported that this valuation fell beyond what United were prepared to spend this summer, leading to the decision to walk away from the deal.
Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler expressed confidence that Baleba would remain at the Amex Stadium, stating he was 'very, very, very confident' about the player staying. 'Just my belief,' Hürzeler added when asked for his reasoning. Despite United's interest, the former Lille starlet remains content on the south coast and is an option to start Brighton's season opener against Fulham.
United have already invested £207.5m on three forwards—Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko—but their priority now lies in midfield, specifically a No.6. Personal terms with Baleba would not have been an issue, as he is willing to push for a move even if it means waiting. However, there is no indication of unhappiness at Brighton, and United may revisit the deal next year or pursue an alternative.
Hürzeler noted no change in Baleba's demeanour, saying: 'He only changed his hair… He's in a really good place. He's very grateful to have the process he had last season, so I didn't see any big change.' The 21-year-old will aim to enhance his standing over the coming campaign, keeping him on United's radar for 2026.
