Ole Gunnar Solskjær could be set for a sensational return to Manchester United as interim manager, with director of football Jason Wilcox viewing him as a prime candidate. The club’s hierarchy—including chief executive Omar Berrada—is focused on a temporary appointment, and Solskjær is believed to be keen, with negotiations reportedly under way.
Senior players, particularly Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire, would welcome Solskjær’s return. The Norwegian previously took over as caretaker in December 2018, leading to a permanent role after an upturn in form. He guided United to two top-three finishes and a Europa League final, though a poor run led to his sacking in November 2021.
Solskjær has been out of work since being dismissed by Besiktas in August. Michael Carrick, who served as caretaker for three games in 2021, has also been contacted and is open to the position. Darren Fletcher, currently standing in for the Burnley match, is another candidate for the remainder of the season.
Fletcher said he sought Sir Alex Ferguson’s blessing before accepting the emergency role. “I don’t like to make any major decisions without speaking to Sir Alex,” he explained. The former midfielder added that leading the team is a “surreal and amazing honour,” though he acknowledged the difficult circumstances following Ruben Amorim’s sacking.
Fletcher confirmed that both Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount are fit to return for the Burnley clash, though they will be on managed minutes. The Scot refused to speculate on whether he wants the job permanently, insisting his focus is solely on the upcoming match.
