Manchester United are on the verge of confirming Michael Carrick as their interim manager, with an official announcement expected within the next 48 hours. The former United midfielder is finalising the details of a deal that will see him take the reins at Old Trafford for the remainder of the season.
Deal Nearing Completion After Positive Talks
According to reports, discussions between the club and Carrick have progressed positively, with the 44-year-old in Manchester today to iron out the final terms. While an announcement is not anticipated today due to some remaining details, the expectation is that Carrick and his backroom staff will be in place to oversee training on Wednesday.
This follows the dismissal of previous manager Rubén Amorim. The club's hierarchy interviewed both Carrick and another former player, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, for the interim role. It is understood that Carrick made a strong impression during the interview process, ultimately securing the position over Solskjaer.
Carrick's Pedigree and Previous Stint
Michael Carrick is no stranger to the Old Trafford dugout, having enjoyed a successful playing career with the club where he won five Premier League titles. Following his retirement in 2018, he had a brief spell as caretaker manager after Solskjaer's permanent departure and before Ralf Rangnick's arrival.
His most significant managerial experience came at Middlesbrough, where he guided the team from the Championship relegation zone to the play-offs in his first full season. The following campaign saw Boro reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals. He was dismissed last summer after the team finished 10th in the table.
The Challenge Ahead at Old Trafford
Carrick's immediate task is to stabilise a team that has struggled for consistency. Under the temporary stewardship of Darren Fletcher, United drew 2-2 with Burnley and suffered a disappointing home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the FA Cup, ending their involvement in both domestic cup competitions.
Fletcher recently admitted the players have a point to prove, stating: 'This team is still good enough to achieve success this season, but they have to dig deep.' He acknowledged fan discontent but urged the squad to win back support through their performances.
The primary objective for the rest of the campaign is now clear: securing European qualification. Currently sitting seventh in the Premier League, United are just three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool. Their next fixture is a crucial Manchester derby at home to rivals Manchester City on Saturday.
