Manchester United bosses have been told to overlook interim manager Michael Carrick and instead appoint Roberto De Zerbi as their next permanent manager, according to World Cup winner Marcel Desailly.
Carrick took charge on an interim basis following the sacking of Ruben Amorim and has impressed with wins over title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal. He will remain in charge until the end of the season, after which United's owners will make a permanent appointment.
Desailly, however, believes De Zerbi would be a strong fit. “Roberto De Zerbi could be a good fit for Manchester United. I've watched him closely at Marseille and he is willing to change formations, such as starting with three, four or five defenders depending on the opposition,” Desailly said.
“He's a coach who doesn't have a defined philosophy and will adapt his team and style from game to game. I would be having nightmares if I was in the United boardroom right now, having to decide which manager to appoint in the summer!”
The Frenchman acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, noting that Carrick offers a calmer option. He also reflected on the failed appointment of Ruben Amorim, who was perceived as intelligent but ultimately did not work out.
