Manchester United's search for a new manager has resumed following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, with former Barcelona boss Xavi emerging as a potential candidate. The 45-year-old Spaniard has been without a club since leaving Barcelona in 2024 and has previously expressed a desire to manage in England.
Amorim was dismissed on Monday, less than 24 hours after a 1-1 draw at Leeds, with his post-match criticism of board members reportedly the final straw. Despite reaching the Europa League final last season, Amorim failed to win any major silverware and oversaw the club's worst Premier League finish, 15th place, last season.
Xavi has a previous connection with United chief executive Omar Berrada from their time together at Barcelona before Berrada's departure in 2011. Speaking to The Athletic last year, Xavi said: 'I'd love to work in the Premier League, because I love the passion there. In Spain, it's too much about the result.' He added that he would be interested in a long-term project, which aligns with United's vision.
Xavi was reportedly a candidate to replace Erik ten Hag in October 2024, with Berrada leading a delegation to Barcelona for talks. With Amorim's departure, Berrada may look to reignite those discussions. Xavi favours a back four that can shift into a three-man defence, which could ease the transition from Amorim's system.
United's director of scouting Christopher Vivell and director of football Jason Wilcox were reportedly dissatisfied with Amorim's approach, suggesting a change was overdue. Xavi's availability and expressed interest in the Premier League make him a strong contender for the role.
