Manchester United are planning to make five new signings this summer after agreeing a deal for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who is set to become the first arrival of the Michael Carrick era.
Champions League return prompts squad overhaul
The Red Devils have secured their return to the Champions League and, having played only 40 games in all competitions last season, recognise that their squad will face greater demands in the coming campaign. As a result, they are targeting several new recruits, with The Times reporting that multiple midfielders are on their radar.
A deal worth an initial £35 million has been struck with Atalanta for the Brazilian star. In addition, United have expressed interest in Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni, West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes, and Brighton's Carlos Baleba. Elliot Anderson has also been linked, but Manchester City appear to be leading the race for his signature.
Striker and left-back targets
A striker is also a priority, with the club confirming that Rasmus Hojlund has left Old Trafford permanently. A left-back is another position under discussion, with Newcastle's Lewis Hall emerging as a potential target.
Despite their recruitment ambitions, the United hierarchy has made it clear, with Carrick's full agreement, that the pathway for young players into the first team must remain open. Carrick, a former United player turned manager, is a strong advocate of utilising the academy.
Carrick, well-versed in the club's traditions, quickly reintegrated Kobbie Mainoo into the squad after his appointment in January. Mainoo enjoyed a return to form, and the club hopes to see more young talent emerge, with Shea Lacey receiving opportunities last season.
Ruben Amorim faced criticism for failing to utilise the club's young talent and for dropping Mainoo to the bench. Carrick's appointment was welcomed by families with players in the academy, who believe he will be more open to their prospects.
Outgoings to fund transfers
United are also set to see several major names leave, freeing up squad places and raising funds for their transfer plans. Manuel Ugarte, Joshua Zirkzee, Marcus Rashford, and Andre Onana are available for sale, while Casemiro has left after his contract expired. Jadon Sancho, who spent an unspectacular season on loan at Aston Villa, will also depart on a free transfer.
