Manchester United are reportedly considering a move for free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a budget-friendly addition to Ruben Amorim’s attacking options. The 28-year-old forward left Everton at the end of his contract on 30 June after nine years at Goodison Park.
United have already spent £62.5 million on Matheus Cunha from Wolves and remain keen on Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo, who would cost in excess of £60 million. However, with profit and sustainability rules in mind, the club are also seeking cheaper alternatives, and Calvert-Lewin fits that profile as a free agent.
Calvert-Lewin scored 71 goals in 273 appearances for Everton after joining from Sheffield United in 2016. However, his form has been hampered by injuries in recent seasons; last term he managed just three goals in 26 Premier League appearances and was sidelined from January to May.
According to reports, United are prepared to offer Calvert-Lewin a contract with appearance-related bonuses to manage his fitness. The striker could serve as a squad player and slot into the number nine role, allowing Cunha to play as a number ten and Mbeumo on the right wing.
United are still looking to offload several forwards, including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and possibly Rasmus Hojlund, as they reshape the squad. Calvert-Lewin posted an emotional farewell to Everton, stating he felt it was the right moment for a new challenge.
