Man Utd shortlist: Nagelsmann, Conte, Howe after Como defeat

Manchester United's 4-1 Champions League defeat to Serie A side Como has intensified scrutiny on manager Michael Carrick, with Julian Nagelsmann, Fabian Hurzeler, Antonio Conte, Eddie Howe and Kieran McKenna all mentioned as potential successors in the Old Trafford dugout.

The heavy loss to the Italian minnows has left the club red-faced, and reports from The Mail Online have identified several contenders who could replace Carrick, though the coach is said to remain safe for the upcoming clash with Bournemouth.

Contenders and Current Status

Hurzeler is the only candidate currently in employment, guiding Brighton and Hove Albion through a strong run in the Premier League and European competition. The Telegraph has reported that the German has admirers at Old Trafford, but he does not have a release clause in his contract, and Brighton have historically commanded significant fees for their coaches, suggesting a move could require a record-breaking sum.

Nagelsmann, Conte, Howe and McKenna are all without a club. Nagelsmann last managed the German national side before stepping down after a disappointing World Cup campaign. Howe, linked to United following successful spells at Bournemouth and Newcastle United, left the Magpies during the summer before the new Premier League season began. McKenna was previously considered during speculation over Erik ten Hag's future, with United and Chelsea reportedly holding talks with the Northern Irishman during his successful tenure at Ipswich Town.

Conte Links and Carrick's Position

Reports have suggested Conte is willing to move to Old Trafford, with intermediaries circulating his name as a potential replacement for Carrick. However, The Telegraph has confirmed the Italian is not being considered as he does not fit the club's managerial framework. In 2018, while at Chelsea, Conte was infamously presented with a Man United shirt bearing 'Conte 1' by a prankster pretending it was a gift from Jose Mourinho.

Carrick's position remains secure for now, despite only two victories in 11 fixtures. He will lead the team against Bournemouth on Sunday with a 2pm kick-off. According to The Times, club officials were left 'stunned' by the lacklustre display and believe they must share responsibility for the decline in results under Carrick's tenure. The 45-year-old earned the permanent role after a phenomenal run as caretaker boss last season, succeeding Ruben Amorim.
