Manchester United have been given fresh hope of securing Gianluigi Donnarumma, with reports suggesting Inter Milan are interested in re-signing Andre Onana. The Italian side are reportedly keen to bring the goalkeeper back to the San Siro just two years after selling him to United.
Onana has had an inconsistent spell at Old Trafford, making several high-profile errors last season. He has been absent from pre-season matches while regaining fitness, but head coach Ruben Amorim insisted the decision to leave him out against Arsenal was tactical. 'No, he's recovered, but the other guys did so well during pre-season, so I need to balance that,' Amorim said.
United have been linked with a number of goalkeepers as potential replacements, including Donnarumma, Aston Villa's Emi Martinez, and Belgian Senne Lammens. Donnarumma, who won the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain last season, is reportedly available for as little as £26 million after PSG's summer move for Lucas Chevalier.
Former United star Wayne Rooney has backed a move for Donnarumma, calling him 'one of the best goalkeepers in the world' and noting his zero errors leading to goals last season. Gary Neville has also urged the club to address the 'glaring issue' in goal, comparing the need for a dominant No.1 to the eras of Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar.
If Inter submit a bid for Onana, it could provide the funds for United to hijack Donnarumma, despite interest from neighbours Manchester City. The Italian goalkeeper is 26 and considered a top target to solve United's goalkeeping concerns.
