Manchester United slipped to a 2-0 defeat at Atletico Madrid, extending their winless run to five matches across all competitions. The Red Devils were behind within 60 seconds after poor defending allowed Pablo Barrios to score from close range.
United responded with chances for Bryan Mbeumo, Marcus Rashford and Carlos Baleba, but all were spurned. The game turned in the second half when Leny Yoro was sent off for a last-man offence, a decision described as debatable. Atletico then capitalised on the extra man, with Ademola Lookman scoring a second goal.
Player ratings from the Spanish capital
Senne Lammens - 6
Almost clawed the ball from behind himself before it crossed the line. Unlucky there, and made the saves expected of him thereafter. Unlucky again with the second goal.
Diogo Dalot - 3
Out of position for the early Atletico goal, and an all-round mess throughout the entire contest.
Lisandro Martinez - 4
There were reports that the Argentine will need to impress this season to avoid being sold. On the basis of performances like this, his time at the club could be coming to an end.
Ayden Heaven - 5
Couldn't sort his feet out for the Barrios shot, despite getting a hefty chunk on the block.
Leny Yoro - 3
Granted, the red card was extremely harsh. It shouldn't have been a sending-off, but he did give the referee a decision to make by allowing the attacker to get goalside.
Midfield struggles and forward failings
Carlos Baleba - 6
Certainly makes United's midfield more competitive. Confident in receiving the ball from defenders and driving them up the pitch. Promising signs.
Andrey Santos - 5
Didn't particularly impress on a rare start. Looked clunky in possession and was given the runaround by the Atletico midfield.
Youri Tielemans - 5
Any improvement in the midfield was negated by the Belgian being anonymous during his 65-minute cameo. Won zero duels in the first half and offered next to nothing in the final third.
Bruno Fernandes - 3
Hit the bar with a cross-cum-shot, but was otherwise dreadful in the hybrid right-wing position. Whether it was tactical limitations or a bad day at the office, the Portuguese playmaker looked out of sorts. Hooked after Atletico went 2-0 up.
Marcus Rashford - 3
Rubbish. Fluffed a chance during United's best spell of the match, having been completely unaware of the danger during the build-up to Atletico Madrid's opener. Hasn't impressed at all since his return from exile.
Bryan Mbeumo - 6
Had two huge chances in the first half, but didn't convert either. They proved costly in the end.
Substitutes' impact
Amad - 6
Added some width and got into some dangerous positions.
Joshua Zirkzee - 5
Played over half an hour, apparently.
Mason Mount - 6
Some tidy touches but nothing substantial.
Harry Maguire - N/A
A late damage-limitation substitution.
Matheus Cunha - N/A
Came on at the same time as Harry Maguire.
