Man Utd player ratings: Baleba shines in 2-0 Atletico loss

Manchester United suffered another defeat as their dismal start to the season continued in Madrid, with Atletico running out 2-0 winners at the Metropolitano. United have won just two of their first nine games of the season after the Champions League loss.

Early setback and missed chances

United got off to the worst possible start, falling behind after just 53 seconds. Alex Baena got the wrong side of Diogo Dalot and picked out Pablo Barrios, who drilled home at the back post.

Carrick's side had chances to get back into the game, with Bryan Mbeumo having two efforts saved by Jan Oblak, while Bruno Fernandes hit the bar from long range.

Red card ends revival hopes

But the chances of a revival were ended when Leny Yoro was sent off for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity in the final 20 minutes and Ademola Lookman killed the game off.

Player ratings

Senne Lammens: Solid hands on a couple of occasions and could do nothing with the goal. Wasn't really tested but his work with the ball at his feet was much better. 6

Diogo Dalot: Caught out by Baena inside the first minute when he was the wrong side on halfway and struggled to recover. Looked a bit unsure positionally and Atleti got joy down that flank. 4

Leny Yoro: Passing was crisp, with one line-breaking delivery into the feet of Tielemans, but saw red in the second half to spoil what had been an encouraging position. 5

Lisandro Martinez: Excellent ball over the top for Rashford in the first half and much improved on some of his recent performances. 6

Ayden Heaven: A little unlucky not to block Barrios' shot but did well in an unfamiliar position and defended well. Comes out of the game with credit. 6

Carlos Baleba: Combative off the ball and good on it. Tired a little but he played some good passes and added some real snap and energy to the centre of the pitch. 7

Andrey Santos: Couple of wayward passes in the first half as he took time to settle into the game but certainly improved. Looks to drop deep and get the ball and helped bring some control. 6

Bruno Fernandes: Doesn't look fit, whatever his manager says. Shunted to the right here but his quality on the ball was way off and he looked frustrated. Put a good chance wide. 4

Youri Tielemans: Looked better playing in a higher role and twice created good chances for Mbeumo in the first half, before a fine pick out for Fernandes after the break. 6

Marcus Rashford: Could have done better with a great pass from Martinez but looked a little short of his best. Still troubled by a hip injury and didn't have his usual zip. 5

Bryan Mbeumo: Should have buried one of his first-half chances, only to be twice denied by Oblak. Looked sharp, however, and sat Romero down brilliantly. 6
