Manchester United Goalkeeper Senne Lammens Issues Defiant Warning to Rivals
Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, has delivered a blunt message to Premier League opponents, declaring he will not be intimidated in physical confrontations during corners and long throw-ins. The Belgian international emphasised his readiness to engage in what he described as a "war in the box" to protect his team's goal.
Physical Battle at Everton Tested Lammens' Resolve
Lammens found himself at the centre of a pushing and shoving match as Everton relentlessly targeted him with corners during United's narrow 1-0 victory at the Dickinson Hill Stadium on Monday night. The intense pressure saw several players, including United defenders Harry Maguire and Leny Yorro, thrown to the ground in the melee.
Despite the chaotic scenes, Lammens stood firm, maintaining his composure to secure another clean sheet and further solidify his status as United's undisputed number one. His performance continues to highlight his growing influence in the team's resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick.
Lammens Embraces Premier League Physicality as a Strength
In a post-match interview, Lammens acknowledged the bruising nature of the encounter, stating he is still recovering from the physical demands. He explained that such battles have been a consistent feature throughout the season, attributing them to the high-stakes environment of the Premier League.
"Physically it was a big battle, a big game, so I'm still recovering from that," Lammens said. "I think it's been like this all season. For me, it's just the way it is. It's the Premier League, it's the physicality and a bit of war in the box."
He added that dealing with this aggression is one of his key strengths, noting that all teams employ similar tactics. "Everyone has to deal with it. It's not like only one team does it; it's just everyone in general. As a goalkeeper, you have to get used to that and train on it as well, and get better at it. I think I've been doing a good job at it, so I'll continue to do that."
Adapting to the Demands of England's Top Flight
Lammens pointed out that the physicality of the Premier League sets it apart from other competitions, with teams constantly innovating to score goals. He credited his teammates for their support in shielding him from opponents during set pieces.
"It's the best league, but especially the physicality is the biggest difference. Everyone's trying to get as many goals as they want, so they're trying new stuff. There are more bodies in front of you, but my team has helped me out as well with blocking the guys away from me. You have to be big and not be easy to be pushed around."
This defiant stance from Lammens underscores his commitment to United's defensive solidity as they navigate a crucial phase of the season. His ability to withstand pressure from rivals like Everton could prove pivotal in their pursuit of success under Carrick's temporary leadership.
