Michael Carrick is expected to remain in charge of Manchester United for their Premier League clash against Bournemouth, despite mounting pressure following a 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
Carrick faces significant scrutiny at Old Trafford after securing just two victories in 11 matches at the start of the campaign, with the team now going seven fixtures without a win across all competitions. The 45-year-old received a two-year permanent deal at the end of last season, yet his tenure already appears precarious following a dreadful start to the campaign that reached its lowest point in Como.
Players and captain at odds
After the lacklustre loss to the Serie A outfit, Carrick criticised his players for insufficient commitment, while captain Bruno Fernandes instead challenged the tactical approach from Carrick and his staff.
It presents an image of a club in turmoil ahead of Sunday's Premier League encounter against Bournemouth at Old Trafford, with Carrick remaining evasive when questioned about his own prospects in Como on Wednesday evening.
Carrick and Fernandes speak out
"I've not give my own position any thought - this is for the supporters - I was one of them watching that and I wasn't happy at all," Carrick said.
When quizzed on whether he had thought about stepping down, Carrick responded: "It's not about me right now, and my feelings in that regard. It's more of as a team and as a football club, what we want to look like, what we should look like. The results can come and go at times, but you've got to do it in a certain way. And that wasn't it."
While captain Bruno Fernandes said: "At this club, there’s too much focus on what's been done in the past, but we're not those people anymore. The club and the players need to understand that. Unfortunately for us - especially when it comes to the players - those who join expect to win trophies, win games, and reach the highest level, but unfortunately, that's been very difficult at this club in recent years. That's the situation."
