Manchester United are set for a second round of discussions with club legends Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick this week, as the search for an interim head coach intensifies.
Former Stars in Frame for Interim Role
The Premier League giants are without a permanent manager following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim on Monday. Sporting director Jason Wilcox held initial, informal talks with both Solskjaer and Carrick on Tuesday, with further conversations planned after Wednesday's match against Burnley.
It is understood that both former midfielders could be offered positions within a new-look backroom team. Another ex-United player, Darren Fletcher, will take temporary charge of the side for the trip to Turf Moor. The club is also reportedly considering other candidates with strong Old Trafford connections, including former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Amorim's Explosive Exit
The need for an interim appointment follows the abrupt departure of Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese coach was sacked after a reported heated meeting with Wilcox last Friday. His exit was confirmed by a brief club statement on Monday morning.
The statement thanked Amorim for his service, noting he had led the team to the 2025 UEFA Europa League final in Bilbao. However, with United sitting sixth in the league after 20 games, the hierarchy decided a change was necessary to push for a higher finish.
Amorim had publicly criticised the club's structure after Sunday's 1-1 draw with Leeds, insisting he was the 'manager' and not merely a 'head coach'—a title used in his official appointment.
Potential Solskjaer Return to Hotseat
If appointed, this would mark a dramatic return for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to the United dugout. The Norwegian originally took over as caretaker manager in December 2018 following Jose Mourinho's sacking, before being handed the job permanently in March 2019. He was himself dismissed in November 2021.
Michael Carrick briefly succeeded him on an interim basis at that time. The club now faces a crucial period, with the immediate focus on securing a positive result against Burnley as they aim to climb the Premier League table from their current sixth-place position.
