Ralf Rangnick is set to play a significant role in Manchester United’s hunt for a new manager, following the sacking of Ruben Amorim earlier this week. The Red Devils are reportedly leaning on the former interim boss’s recommendations, with Christopher Vivell taking a central role in the recruitment process.
Vivell, who joined United as interim director of recruitment in summer 2024 before being made permanent in February, previously worked with Rangnick at Hoffenheim, Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig. According to reports, Rangnick had initially earmarked Vivell for a role at Old Trafford before leaving the club in 2022.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has emerged as a potential candidate, with his contract expiring at the end of the season. Rangnick has previously praised his compatriot, calling him “one of the most exciting coaches in Europe.” Glasner, meanwhile, has remained non-committal about his future, stating he is “completely relaxed” about the speculation.
With interim boss Darren Fletcher in charge for Wednesday’s trip to Burnley, United are keen to appoint a permanent successor soon. Vivell is expected to lead the search, with Rangnick’s endorsement carrying weight behind the scenes.
