Manchester United supporters are being urged to join a minute's applause for former Liverpool forward Diogo Jota during Sunday's Premier League clash at Old Trafford. Jota tragically died in a car crash last year alongside his brother Andre Silva.
The proposal, reportedly sent to the Manchester United Supporters' Trust (MUST), suggests the applause take place in the 20th minute, reflecting Jota's squad number at Liverpool. MUST has encouraged fans to share the idea and gauge support within their groups.
United players have been made aware of the plan, and the club has indicated any tribute should be fan-led. This follows a similar gesture in 2022 when Liverpool fans applauded in the seventh minute for Cristiano Ronaldo after the death of his newborn son.
Ronaldo later thanked Anfield on Instagram, writing: 'One world... One sport... One global family... Thanks, Anfield. Me and my family will never forget this moment of respect and compassion.'
Sunday's match is crucial for Champions League qualification, with United needing a win to secure their place, while Liverpool could overtake them with victory.
