A group of Manchester United supporters have called on fellow fans to join in a minute's applause for Diogo Jota during Sunday's clash against arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford. The match is crucial in the race for a Champions League spot, with United looking to secure their place while Liverpool aim to leapfrog Michael Carrick's side.
However, beyond the on-pitch rivalry, home fans are being urged to set aside hostilities and honour the former Liverpool forward, who tragically died in a car crash last year alongside his brother Andre Silva. A proposal has been sent to the Manchester United Supporters' Trust (MUST) suggesting a minute's applause in the 20th minute, Jota's shirt number at Anfield.
MUST have encouraged supporters to share the idea and gauge backing within their groups. It is understood that some United players have been informed, and the club has indicated that any tribute should be fan-led.
Should the tribute go ahead, it would mark the second time the two fanbases have united in remembrance. In 2022, Liverpool fans sang 'You'll Never Walk Alone' in the seventh minute for Cristiano Ronaldo following the death of his newborn son. Ronaldo later thanked Anfield, calling it a moment of respect and compassion.
Former United manager Ruben Amorim, captain Bruno Fernandes, and Diogo Dalot previously laid floral tributes at Anfield after Jota's death. A minute's silence was also held at Old Trafford in July last year.
